Self Storage Tips
Make the most of your storage space with these packing and organization tips
1. Pack Smart — Use Uniform Boxes
Use boxes of similar sizes to make stacking easier and more stable. Fill every box completely — partially-filled boxes collapse under weight. Heavier items go in smaller boxes; lighter items can go in larger boxes.
2. Label Everything Clearly
Label every box on the top and sides with its contents and the room it belongs to. Use color-coded tape by room for easy visual identification. Create a simple inventory list of what's in each numbered box.
3. Disassemble Large Furniture
Take apart bed frames, desks, and tables to save space. Keep all screws, bolts, and hardware in clearly labeled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture. Wrap furniture components in moving blankets or plastic wrap to prevent scratches.
4. Use Vertical Space
Store items floor-to-ceiling. Sturdier items go on the bottom, lighter items on top. Use shelving units inside your storage unit for smaller items. Stack uniform boxes all the way to the ceiling to maximize every cubic foot.
5.Create an Aisle
Leave a small walking path down the center of your unit. Store items you'll need to access frequently near the front. This saves you from having to unpack everything just to get to something in the back.
6.Protect Your Furniture
Cover upholstered furniture and mattresses with plastic covers or moving blankets. Elevate items off the floor slightly with pallets if possible. Keep wooden furniture away from direct contact with concrete to prevent moisture absorption.
7.Protect Sensitive Items
Electronics and artwork should be stored in their original packaging when possible. Wrap them in anti-static bubble wrap. Important documents, photos, and irreplaceable items should be stored in waterproof containers.
8.Store Appliances Properly
Clean and dry appliances thoroughly before storing. Leave refrigerator and washing machine doors slightly open to prevent mold and odor. Drain all water lines on washers and dishwashers.
9.Use Locks — Good Ones
Invest in a quality disc lock or padlock for your unit. The lock is the last line of defense for your belongings. Avoid inexpensive padlocks that can be cut or broken easily.
10. Take an Inventory
Document what you're storing — take photos and create a written inventory. This is valuable if you ever need to file an insurance claim and helps you remember what's in the unit without having to visit.
